In October 2023, RH Carter Architects had the opportunity to work with a local environmental non-profit, A Greener Future, for a team clean-up event. We met with the AGF team at the beautiful Colonel Samuel Smith Park, where we learned we were hunting for nurdles.

Nurdles are small pellets of plastic that serve as raw material in the manufacture of plastic products. According to Ocean Conservancy, these pellets “are found globally throughout the ocean and across diverse ecosystems. This includes remote locations such as Antarctica, demonstrating the ability for these small particles to be transported far distances by wind, wave action and ocean currents.”

It was an eye-opening and educational experience for our group. The team split up along the beach and got to work. After two hours of hard work (and supervision from our team mascot, Fergus), our team had found over 3,000 nurdles!

RH Carter Architects is committed to sustainable development and to doing our part to protect the environment. Our office is in a LEED-gold building, and we incorporate sustainable practices into our work. Both internal educational opportunities and staff volunteer events for our local community are a large part of our office culture.

After a successful and educational afternoon, the RH Carter Architects team went to one of our favourite local spots (shout-out to The Crooked Cue!) to debrief and celebrate the day. Stay tuned for future events as we continue learning and growing in our community!
